They write this stuff just to troll me.

My phone is from 2007, and between unemployment, two academic degrees and two presidential election cycles, I’ve thrown it against a lot of walls.

It’s a flip phone, it doesn’t even have any pictures or internets in it, and I like it that way. Frankly I wish I had one of those bricks from the 90’s. They don’t make them as sturdy as they used to.

It’s a trick question. If someone asks “State or UNC” the answer is always State, because a Carolina person will most likely a) call UNC “Carolina” and b) not ask you about State in the first place; they’ll ask “Duke or Carolina?”

And of course the answer to “Duke or Carolina” is always Carolina, because the Duke person won’t ask about your loyalty at all; they’ll just start talking about their hometown in Connecticut.

And should any Wake Forest people be present, they will try to join the conversation like so many eager, evangelical Baptist puppies whose owners have trained them to bark at minorities, and you can ignore them.

this has been my art project for the past two days. the first step was taking every more-or-less autonomous nation/state on the planet (213 by my count, but i could be off by one or two, since i added a few that i didn’t see before working on the map), smooshing its flag down to one pixel, then blowing it back up to get an averaged, single color from the whole flag. the second step was isolating every region from the map that met the pretty loosely-defined criteria that i set, and then coloring them to match their respective flag-colors.

interesting facts i learned from making this map:

nepal’s flag-color is kinda transparent, because nepal’s flag is wonky as fuck and you can’t make it into a perfect quadrilateral without screwing up the color balance.

japan’s flag-color matches up pretty closely to a sakura cherry blossom, which i found cute and interesting.

i’m split between Kazakhstan and Cambodia for which one has the coolest flag-color.

the entire middle east has four basic color schemes: red, green, brown (red and green mixed), and Israel.

Antarctica has no agreed-upon flag, because there isn’t a governing body down there.

little tiny islands way the hell out in the ocean aren’t the only territories still owned by other countries. did you know that French Guiana (which is east of Suriname (which is east of Guyana (which is east of Venezuela))) is actually an administrative region of France, and sends senators and representatives to Paris? i used the French flag for its flag-color since it’s governed as a subdivision of France. that also makes it the largest part of the European Union that isn’t actually in Europe.

there are like a dozen or so places on the planet that said to their governments “we are not part of your country anymore” and their governments replied with “lol no but we’ll leave you alone to govern yourselves anyway.” this usually involved a horrible war, but sometimes it was just like a parent ignoring their child in the hopes that they’ll stop throwing a tantrum if they don’t encourage it.

Azerbaijan apparently does not give a fuck, because it’s not only cut in half by Armenia, but also has a big hole punched in it by the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic.

Western Sahara is pretty hotly contested as to who holds the claim to it, so i gave it that stripey pattern between the colors of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic and Morocco.

there are a bunch of islands that were on the map that i just made light grey because there are literally like a billion islands on earth and trying to figure out which is which between two different map projections is an exercise in driving yourself cuckoo-bananas.

there are a lot of places in the world, and the word “country” no longer has any meaning to me whatsoever.

a lot of the newer nation/states are not actually recognized by most of the world. founding a new country takes a long time, and requires the rest of the world agreeing with you that you have the right to govern yourself. but the nation/states i included on this map have all been officially recognized by at least one major world power. there aren’t any micronations depicted. i was going to include them, but then i did this for like 20 hours and decided to not do the extra work that that would take.

Mac-Ur-Roni was kind enough to visit our apartment complex this evening, and they’ve got some great stuff.

All mac and cheese dishes start with a basic cheesy mac featuring cheddar, colby and jack cheeses. Add on everything from onions to braised short ribs, and you’ve got yourself a meal. They’ve also got sliders with great toppings like pulled pork and buffalo chicken, if mac isn’t your thing.

We tried the basic mac and cheese with short ribs and onions, mac and cheese with gouda, ham, bacon, and sundried tomatoes, and a buffalo chicken slider. All were quite tasty. By the way, their vegetarian options also looked great—plenty of veggie toppings and an eggplant slider.
